How does Quick-Eze® work?

How Do Antacids Work?

Antacids are medicines used to alleviate symptoms of heartburn and indigestion. Think of your stomach as a busy kitchen. When you eat, your stomach produces acid to break down the food, much like a chef uses heat to cook a meal. Your stomach has a natural mucus barrier that protects its lining from being damaged by this acid. But sometimes, this acid can get a bit out of hand. In some cases, the barrier breaks down, allowing the acid to cause irritation to the stomach lining. In other cases, the muscular band at the top of the stomach (the sphincter) might not close properly, allowing acid to escape into the oesophagus. This is known as acid reflux, which can cause heartburn and inflammation.

Antacids contain bases (alkalis), which are the opposite of acids. When an acid and a base combine, they neutralise each other, reducing the acidity in your stomach. Antacids work by neutralising this acid, reducing its effects and helping to relieve the pain associated with the burning sensation in acid reflux.

Common types of antacids

There are different types of antacids that are available including:

  • Calcium Carbonate: Found in Quick-Eze®, it provides fast relief by neutralising stomach acid.
  • Magnesium Hydroxide: Often found in liquid antacids, it neutralises acid quickly.
  • Magnesium Carbonate: Treats occasional heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach or other symptoms caused by excess stomach acid.
  • Aluminium Hydroxide: Commonly used in combination with magnesium hydroxide, it provides effective relief.
  • Sodium Bicarbonate: A fast-acting antacid that neutralises stomach acid.

Understanding How Quick-Eze® Works

Whether it’s brought on by late-night tacos, pregnancy, or a bout of stress-eating, Quick-Eze® helps relieve symptoms of heartburn and indigestion by neutralising stomach acid fast.

The active ingredients contained in Quick-Eze® antacid tablets work to provide rapid relief from heartburn & indigestion. As it dissolves, Quick-Eze® continues to work, neutralising gastric acid in the stomach, to quickly soothe your discomfort. The active ingredients such as calcium carbonate, react with stomach acid to form water and other neutral compounds. This process helps to quickly alleviate acid reflux symptoms such as heartburn, allowing you to get on with your day.

Frequently Asked Questions About How Quick-Eze® Works

How long do antacids take to work?

Antacids typically start to work within minutes of taking them, providing fast relief from symptoms like heartburn and indigestion. The speed at which they work is due to their direct action on the stomach acid. When you take an antacid, its active ingredients, such as calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, or sodium bicarbonate, quickly dissolve and begin to neutralise the excess acid in your stomach.

How does Quick-Eze® help?

Quick-Eze® helps relieve heartburn and indigestion by neutralising excess stomach acid. When you take Quick-Eze®, the calcium carbonate reacts with the stomach acid. This reaction helps to increase the pH level in the stomach, making it less acidic and thereby alleviating the burning sensation and discomfort associated with heartburn and indigestion.

How does calcium carbonate neutralise stomach acid?

Calcium carbonate neutralises stomach acid through a chemical reaction that reduces the acidity in the stomach. When calcium carbonate comes into contact with hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the stomach, it reacts to form calcium chloride, carbon dioxide, and water. The neutralisation reaction reduces the overall acidity of the stomach contents, effectively increasing the pH level. This helps to alleviate symptoms such as heartburn, acid indigestion, and stomach upset by decreasing the acidity that irritates the lining of the oesophagus and stomach. 2

How do chewable antacids work?

Chewable antacids work by neutralising stomach acid to provide quick relief from heartburn and indigestion. Antacids contain active ingredients such as calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, or sodium bicarbonate, which are alkaline substances. When you chew the antacid, it breaks down into smaller particles allowing it to react more rapidly with the stomach acid.
